I read more productivity and learning than straight up business books, but sometimes they overlap and can help you in many aspects of your life.
Here is one you may enjoy.
Measure What Matters by John Doerr
It really made me stop and think: Does what we are doing matter?
It applied so well to my manufacturing business. It made me review everything and realize exactly how much rhetoric had taken over among employees and managers.
Measure What Matters essentially tries to make you accountable for everything by saying, “Okay, let’s measure that, log it, and review it. Did it work?”
You will then often find that things you gave such importance to were actually a complete waste of time or, even worse, working against your company.
This kind of approach can also really show up those who have big, beautiful opinions that actually don’t stack up when accountability starts to become a thing.
In fact, prepare for problems with this approach, as people will fight you at every step, trying to stop these measurements from being taken in fear of change. The one thing so many people seem to fear regardless of whether good can come of it. Despite the resistance you may face, by taking a measured and accountable approach to decision-making, you will be able to make sure that those decisions are well thought out, effective and made with the best interests of your business in mind.
Yet I would also say that this can apply to any kind of system be they enormous or small. I think it is well worth a read.
So, there we have it.
The best business book I read in 2022.
